The American Bar Association’s annual survey of state bars and licensing agencies provides a comprehensive national count of lawyers dating back to 1878. It includes data on the number of active resident lawyers in each state over the past decade and details on the percentage of lawyers by gender, race, and ethnicity from 2012 to 2022. One significant finding from the survey is that the percentage of Black lawyers has remained nearly unchanged over the past decade. In 2012, 4.7% of all lawyers were Black, while today that number is 4.5%. This is significantly lower than the 13.4% share of Black people in the U.S. population.

The reality is that there are about 1.3 million licensed attorneys in the U.S., serving a population of over 330 million people (American Bar Association, 2023). However, not all of these attorneys are readily available to the average person. Many are employed in government positions, working for large corporations, or focusing on specialized areas of law.
